Neighbours confirms the soap is ending after 37 years

We promise to do everything we can to give the show the send-off it deserves.

It was announced last month that Channel 5 will no longer be airing the soap beyond the summer, meaning it had to search for new funding options, and, sadly, it looks like it didn’t find any.

A spokesperson for production company Fremantle said: “It is with sadness that after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes broadcast, we are confirming that Neighbours will cease production in the summer.

“Following the loss of a key broadcast partner in the UK, and despite a search for alternative funding, we currently have no option but to rest the show.

“Everyone at Neighbours has been overwhelmed by the love and support from the audience since the news came out.

“The show has brought a sunny slice of Australia into the homes of millions of viewers around the world launching the careers of dozens of household names along the way.

“But as this chapter of Ramsay Street comes to a close, we promise to do everything we can to give the show the send-off it deserves.”

Channel 5 previously described the show in a statement as being “a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade”, while it thanked “the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series”.

The statement continued: “We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.”

Neighbours first started in 1985, with the show moving to Channel 5 in 2008 where it became a crucial part of the daytime schedule.

Since it started, it’s launched the careers of many Australian stars, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie and Holly Valance.

As for what we can expect from the last few episodes, well, lan Fletcher, who plays Karl Kennedy on the soap, teased some familiar faces will be returning to say goodbye.

“I do know that it has been announced the wonderful Harold Bishop will return to Ramsay Street towards the end of the show,” he said on This Morning.

“Someone from Karl’s sordid past is definitely coming back and there are many, many other names in the pot.

“I can assure you that the producers are working very, very hard to try and entice some of the most loved characters from Neighbours to at least make some appearances.”
