Neighbours star Jackie Woodburne ‘given last-ever words in final scene of soap’

Neighbours stalwart Jackie Woodburne has reportedly been given the honour of the final-ever scene on the Aussie soap, as it comes to an end this summer.

The actress, who has played Susan Kennedy on the show for almost 30 years, is said to speak about ‘family and friendships’ in the final poignant moments of the programme, which is sure to add to the emotional impact of Neighbours finishing after 37 years.

The soap first aired in March 1985, and Jackie joined as teacher Susan in 1994, alongside Alan Fletcher as her husband Karl, Erinsborough’s GP with a wandering eye.

The 66-year-old actress is said to reminisce on highs and lows before ending with a message to all ‘good neighbours’.

A source told The Sun: ‘Jackie is very much seen as the soap’s matriarch. It felt right that the last words ever spoken would be by her.’

‘She delivers the performance of a lifetime,’ they added.

The iconic soap filmed its last scenes last week, with the show’s boss, Jason Herbison, releasing a final cast photo alongside an emotional tribute, devastating fans online who rallied to share their love of Neighbours too.

‘We all knew this day was coming but until we were here in this moment when the very last scene was filmed, it was hard to express how we would all feel,’ the producer said.

‘Of course, it is sad and tears were shed, but we’re also enormously proud. 37 years is an incredible achievement and that should be celebrated.

‘We’ve also been incredibly touched by the response from our viewers all over the world. Neighbours is more than a TV show to many people.

‘They see us as part of the family and we feel privileged to have been invited into their homes, and I know the legacy of Neighbours will live on for many years.’

Neighbours royalty Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan returned to film scenes for the final episode as much-loved couple Charlene and Scott Robinson, while Hollywood actor Guy Pearce also reprised his role as Mike Young.

Musing on how things had begun for him in showbiz on the set of the soap, Guy revealed: ‘It’s where it all started for me professionally. I’ve been asked to come back on occasions over the years and wondered if it was the right thing to do, but once I knew the show was finishing, I knew I had to do it.

‘While I’ve caught up with many of the cast I worked with on the show over the years, there is nothing like being here all together again.’

Neighbours’ final episode is set to air on Channel 5 on Monday, August 1.
