Neighbours star Geoff Paine addresses hopes for show reprieve after fan petitions

There’s hope for Ramsay Street yet.

Neighbours star Geoff Paine, who plays Clive Gibbons, has shared his hopes for the soap’s future, after Channel 5 confirmed that it would be axing the series from its schedule.

Channel 5 sent shockwaves through the Neighbours fanbase last week when it announced that it would be dropping the Aussie soap from its schedule as early as this summer.

Neighbours‘ production company Fremantle has paused production indefinitely in the wake of the news, as they continue the search for a new broadcaster to collaborate with.

Now, Geoff Paine has offered his thoughts on the direction Neighbours could take next, telling Studio 10 that he hopes the “extraordinary” fan response to the news will persuade a production company to keep the show going – no matter the format.

Paine – who’s played Dr Clive Gibbons on-and-off since 1986 – suggested that as Neighbours has already “gone through various iterations over the years”, a new era for the soap could be the answer.

“It’s a different world,” he explained. “Our viewing habits are changing as we know right round the world, and there’s so many more options to choose from.

“We can only hope that a production team or a production company can say, ‘Okay, we think we can keep this thing going.'”

As well as confirming that Fremantle are looking for a new “production partner”, Paine suggested that the soap may change if it is rescued.

“Whether it changes the format, whether it changes the look of the show, we don’t know,” he added. “But it is part of the schedule of many people’s working weeks.”

There’s hope for Ramsay Street yet.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
