Lie with Me proved to be quite a success.
Channel 5 may have called time on the long-running Neighbours, but it still has plans for more Australian content.
In case you somehow missed the news, Neighbours will come to an end in early August after 37 years on the air. Channel 5 became its home after it left the BBC in 2008.
And while this is a blow for those who love their daily trips to Erinsborough, it looks like we will have no shortage of fresh Australian content on the channel in the coming years.
Network 10’s Senior Vice President, Programming and Content Daniel Monaghan has been talking to TV Tonight and he explained that the last show that 10 did with Channel 5 was certainly not a one-and-done deal.
“We did Lie with Me, last year but there are three more, and they’re all being shot in Australia,” he said.
He went on to explain that Channel 5’s intention is to do more dramas “set in Australia but with British characters”, adding that “the lead in Lie with Me was a British actress from EastEnders. So that meant something to them because it was more of a hybrid.”
That lead was Charlie Brooks, who recently re-joined EastEnders as Janine Butcher – time will tell whether it will be another UK soap star heading up the next one.
Charlie was joined on the show by Brett Tucker, who played Daniel Fitzgerald on Neighbours, and Phoebe Roberts, who currently stars as Freya.
One potential candidate for a lead role is another Walford star, Danny Dyer, with The Sun reporting that he has already signed on the dotted line.
As for why the network couldn’t have just kept Neighbours instead, Beverley McGarvey, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer of Paramount ANZ, added: “The investment they would make in a couple of series is nothing like the investment they would need to make 260 episodes of Neighbours.”
As for Neighbours, the soap is currently in its final ever week of filming and it will wrap production for good this coming Friday.
Its grand finale will air on Channel 5 on August 1.
Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.
