Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Hollyoaks star Haiesha Mistry has revealed that the show’s Mallorca storyline will feature more problems for Yazz and Tom Cunningham’s marriage.
The young couple recently faced a crisis when Tom lost thousands of pounds thanks to an ill-fated investment opportunity that James Nightingale had recommended.
Although Yazz and Tom recently appeared to have made peace over the money blunder, more issues crop up when they fly out to Mallorca for Cindy Cunningham and Luke Morgan’s stag and hen celebrations.
As Yazz makes it clear that she’s looking to have fun during the trip away, she tells Tom that “what happens in Mallorca, stays in Mallorca”.
This sends Tom’s imagination into overdrive, as he wonders whether Yazz is seeking freedom to be with another man during the holiday.
Speaking exclusively to Insertions.us, Haiesha explained: “Yazz is part of Cindy’s hen party. It’s Cindy, Zara and Yazz all together, while the boys go off on their adventures.
“Yazz has still got this ongoing storyline with Tom, where he gambled all of their money away in a get-rich-quick scheme. Yazz is still annoyed with him over that and she tells him that what happens in Mallorca, stays in Mallorca.
“Yazz is trying to be playful with her husband, but she’s also reminding him that she’s on a hen party and she wants to enjoy it.
“That puts a spanner in the works for Tom, because he reads too much into it and panics. So there’s a rift between those two during the holiday.
“With Cindy and Luke’s stag and hen parties, the episodes contain a mix of everything. This is Hollyoaks, so we always like to surprise our viewers and we’ve got some surprises in store here.”
On whether Yazz and Tom still make a good match, Haiesha continued: “I think they do want different things sometimes and that has been a reoccurring argument.
“It’s been Yazz shouting at Tom a lot of the time! On set sometimes, I’m like: ‘I don’t want to shout at you, Ellis!’ But it’s just because of how fiery Yazz is. She doesn’t stand for anything.
“I think that’s why Yazz and Tom work so well together because they are polar opposites. That’s what we like about it. Tom is so sensible and cautious, but Yazz wants him to live his life more and stop messing about.
“When we have those scenes where we argue, it just brings out their relationship as a couple and I’m excited to see how it develops in the future.”
Haiesha told us that she was excited for the opportunity to film abroad with Hollyoaks for the first time.
She said: “When we first heard rumours about the trip, for a while I was wondering: ‘Am I going?’ I thought I wouldn’t be going and I was debating it for ages! But then I thought: ‘Hold on a minute, Yazz is part of the Cunninghams, so she definitely could be’.
“Then I started getting excited and I got the phone call from the producer to tell me that I was going. It was really exciting.
“I flew out for a few days before filming and spent some time in Palma. I was a proper tourist! I saw the sights and I was glad that I got to do that before filming started.”
The Hollyoaks holiday scenes will feature the conclusion of Luke’s dementia storyline, which began with his diagnosis in December 2019.
Haiesha added: “I think it’s really important to cover. It’s pretty close to home for me, because my granddad had dementia. The topics that Hollyoaks explore with Luke’s storyline are ones that I’ve had on my doorstep.
“I think it’s very important to shine a light on that and raise awareness. Luke is such a big character in the show and we’ve shown how quickly dementia can affect someone’s mental state. One minute someone remembers everything, the next minute, they’re looking at you and they don’t know who you are.
“That is the harsh reality for families and carers, so I think it’s really important. It’s very heartbreaking because Luke is such a loved character, who’s been in the show almost since the beginning.
“It’s a sad story, but one that needs to be told. It’s fascinating how Hollyoaks have told the story in these Mallorca episodes.”
Hollyoaks now streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.
