Hollyoaks star Bethannie Hare “overwhelmed” by reaction to exit

Hollyoaks star Bethannie Hale has thanked fans for their “overwhelming” response to her final scenes as Cher McQueen.

Bethannie bowed out of the Channel 4 soap earlier this week, after nearly two years in the role.

Cher’s exit followed the funeral of her dad Sylver, where, after attending the funeral, she surprised the McQueens with her decision to reconcile with her mum.

Following Wednesday’s (February 2) first-look episode, Bethannie thanked Hollyoaks fans for their support during her time on the show.

“Just reading all your tweets and messages and honestly I’m overwhelmed by all your kind words!” she wrote on Twitter. “I cannot tell you how much this means to me and cannot thank you all enough! It’s been an honour to play Cher and honestly the best two years of my life! Thank you all so so much!”

Bethannie recently spoke to Insertions.us about Cher’s final days in the village, admitting that she preferred filming a “nicer ending” for her character, rather than being killed off in a dramatic stunt.

“I think I preferred the nicer ending for the character,” she explained. “It’s in these few weeks, after the explosion, that everyone has seen how much Cher has grown. It would have been sad for the audience not to see that.”

Although Bethannie supports Cher’s decision to make amends with her mum, the actress revealed that she’s keeping the door open for a possible return in the future. “Never say never,” she teased.

“It’s emotional, as it’s been the most amazing two years of my life,” she continued. “But I’m also really excited to see what character I’ll be playing next and the opportunities that come up.”

Hollyoaks airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look screenings at 7pm on E4. Selected omnibus episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video.
