Hollyoaks spoilers below.
Hollyoaks’ Cindy Cunningham is set to get a surprise ally in the aftermath of Luke Morgan’s death in the form of Mercedes McQueen.
In the new heartbreaking episode, the Cunningham family return home and have to face the reality that Luke is gone, but Cindy’s behaviour becomes increasingly concerning when she puts on her wedding dress and pushes to open the burger stall.
In December 2019, Luke was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, with his condition deteriorating in recent months.
Cindy ignores her family’s concerns and goes to buy more produce from Price Slice, where she ends up snapping at Pearl. However, Mercedes intervenes and the two women bond over the fact that they both tragically lost their partners. Mercedes even offers her some encouragement.
Later, Ollie has a surprise for Cindy at the folly, revealing that Luke had been taking dancing lessons for the wedding. And as Luke shows her his moves, Cindy says her final goodbye to him.
This is not the first time Mercedes and Cindy have been allies. They also had a friendship of sorts when Mercedes killed Dr Browning in 2013 and ended up getting away with it too.
Talking about this storyline, actor Gary Lucy revealed to Insertions.us that he was the one who had pitched this idea: “It had never been done before and that is what Hollyoaks is all about.
“It is leading the pack in regards to groundbreaking and heavy stories. This was a great opportunity to come back and to ultimately finish with another story that is a first basically – young dementia, especially.”
The actor has already filmed his final scenes, and Luke’s funeral is slated to take place in July.
Hollyoaks now streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.
