Will Faith ever be redeemed in her children’s eyes?
Emmerdale spoilers follow.
Tonight’s Emmerdale (May 5) saw Faith Dingle’s hard work to get in her son Cain’s good graces be teared down because of a drunken fling.
The episode found Faith relying on her newly hatched plan to find her way back to Cain’s heart through his son – by bringing his son Kyle to the allotment to exercise his gardening passion.
With Cain on board for the excursion, Faith took a chance and also asked her son to tag along.
At the allotment Kyle happily put his gardening skills in use helping Dan Spencer, Cain’s employee, who had found himself in over his head with the graft.
Kyle’s contentment seemed to also soften up his father, who up until now had had difficulty believing Faith’s good intentions.
But it seemed her thoughtful gesture had earned her major points – and a near smile from her son that left her elated.
Emotional with glee at having made some progress with her family, she declared Cain’s “smile” deserved a pint and, since she felt like she owed Dan, she dragged him along to the pub.
A few scenes later the duo had found themselves heavily inebriated and downing shot after shot.
Suddenly overcome by tears, Faith started drunkenly mumbling about fixing Kyle’s tulips, got up and dragged Dan behind her setting course for the allotment.
Unfortunately, she did not count on how her inebriated state would factor in gardening as she soon found herself rolling in the mud laughing – and destroying Kyle’s patch in the process.
Soon after she led Cain’s employee to the shed, but the duo were soon caught by Cain, who was returning with Kyle to pick up his son’s tools. Instead, what they found was a demolished patch and a disheveled Dan exiting the shed.
Aware of what had occurred, Cain sent Kyle back to the car and confronted his mother for her latest indiscretion.
“You should be ashamed of yourself,” he said before making his exit.
Still drunk, Faith followed him back to his car, attempting to convince him that what he had seen had been “innocent”, but Cain was clearly done listening to excuses.
Furious, he pointed out how Kyle could have caught them instead of him, risking traumatising the boy in the same way that Cain had been when he was young.
And it didn’t help matters when her mortified daughter Chas later revealed that Dan had been her ex husband. Giving Faith a stern talk about her tendency to constantly hurt her children, she too seemed to give up, asking Faith to clean up her vomit and get out.
Will Faith salvage what’s left of her relationship with her children?
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
