Emmerdale was declared the worthy winner of Best British Soap at tonight’s (June 11) British Soap Awards, broadcast live from Hackney Empire on ITV.
Over the course of this glitzy ceremony, the Yorkshire Dales gem racked up a total of 4 prizes – joint top with EastEnders – while Coronation Street (3), Hollyoaks (2) and Doctors (1) proudly took home some silverware too.
Presided over by This Morning’s Phillip Schofield, the gong announcing line-up included Axel Blake (of Britain’s Got Talent fame), Line of Duty’s Tommy Jessop and the legendary Stephanie Beacham.

Special honours were also awarded to EastEnders’ Letitia Dean for her iconic turn as Sharon Watts over the last few decades with the Outstanding Achievement Award, as well as Coronation Street and Emmerdale writer Jan McVerry, who won The Tony Warren Award.

Soaking up this giant achievement amongst her castmates, Lydia Dingle actress Karen Blick grabbed the statuette and said: “It means the world because this a public vote for us, so thank you!
“Well done to the whole team, we managed to not go off air throughout the whole of the pandemic. It’s an absolute honour and delight to get this award in Emmerdale’s 50th year aswell, so tune in later in the year where there will be more drama in the Dales!”
