Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf)

Status: Returning

When: Spring 2022

More info: EastEnders bosses have announced that Kim Medcalf will be reprising the role of Sam Mitchell. Kim previously portrayed the character between 2002 and 2005. Original actress Danniella Westbrook played Sam on and off between 1990 and 2000, as well as appearing for guest stints in 2009, 2010 and 2016.

Kim commented: “When the BBC approached me last year to reprise the role of Sam I was thrilled. She’s a brilliant character and I can’t wait to get back in the Square this spring and work with the amazing cast of both familiar and new faces.”

Kate Oates, Head of Continuing Drama at the BBC, added: “The Mitchells are one of the most iconic families in soap, and I have long wanted to bring Sam back into the family fold.

“With Phil potentially facing a long spell inside, Sam arrives back in Walford ready to take what she sees as her rightful place in the Mitchell empire. But with strong grudges against Kat, Sharon, Jack and Denise, to name but a few, her return is guaranteed to be explosive…”

Linda Carter (Kellie Bright)

Status: Returning

When: 2022

More info: Kellie Bright said a temporary farewell to EastEnders in 2021 as she went on maternity leave. She made a brief return in the show’s Christmas episodes and will be back again this year.

An EastEnders source recently told “With Kellie set to return very soon, the Carters are going to be at the heart of some big drama this year.”

Mick Carter (Danny Dyer)

Status: Leaving

When: 2022

More info: After a successful run in EastEnders since 2013, Danny Dyer has decided that it’s time to leave his role as Mick Carter. His exit scenes will air this year, although his final storyline has yet to be revealed.

An EastEnders spokesperson told Insertions.usDanny will be leaving EastEnders when his contract comes to an end later this year.

“Danny has made Mick Carter an iconic character which we shall always be grateful for, however we won’t be saying goodbye just yet as there’s still quite some time – and plenty of explosive drama for Mick – to come before he departs Walford.”

A friend of Danny’s added: “Danny loves EastEnders but as an actor he feels the time is right to explore other roles. He’s incredibly grateful to the show and the opportunities it has given him and it wasn’t a decision he took lightly, but after playing Mick for nearly nine years he feels it’s time to give the character of Mick a rest.

“He’s not sure how they are going to write him out yet but he’s hoping that they leave the door open for Mick.”

Ash Kaur (Gurlaine Kaur Garcha)

Status: Returning

When: TBC

More info: Ash decided it was time to leave Walford after realising that her mum Suki would never truly accept her for who she really is.

EastEnders sources have since indicated that Gurlaine Kaur Garcha, who plays Ash, is taking a break from the show and will return at some point in the future.

Coronation Street

Linda Hancock (Jacqueline Leonard)

Status: Returning

When: Early 2022

More info: Jacqueline Leonard was recently pictured filming on location at an airport for Coronation Street. She’s reprising her role as Joseph Brown’s grandmother Linda Hancock, who was last seen in 2015.

In upcoming episodes, Linda travels over from Portugal to see her grandson and is shocked to learn of Chesney’s recent family troubles. After hearing what has been going on, will she be taking Joseph back abroad with her?

Coronation Street‘s producer Iain MacLeod had previously teased that the Joseph story would lead to the reintroduction of a character. He said in January: “It spins off into a story that will see the reintroduction of a character connected to that household, which will provide yet another threat to the stability of the residents of Number 5.”

Nicky Wheatley (Kimberly Hart-Simpson)

Status: Returning

More info: In December 2021, Kimberly Hart-Simpson confirmed tabloid reports of a return for her character Nicky Wheatley.

Addressing fans on Twitter, she commented: “I can confirm I am returning to @itvcorrie – the best street in the world. #corrie #nickywheatley.”

Nicky was last seen on the show in late 2020, when her storyline with Daniel Osbourne came to an end.

Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell)

Status: Leaving

When: April 2022

More info: Alexandra Mardell has decided to leave Coronation Street after four years in the role of Emma Brooker. Emma’s departure will tie in with the ongoing storyline surrounding Ted’s death.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod commented: “Big-hearted Emma has found herself in a massive pickle – one which will ultimately cause her to wave goodbye to the cobbles. At least for now…

“Alexandra has been pure Corrie gold since the first moment she lit up the screen in 2018 and I am sure viewers will miss Emma’s sunny, silly sweetness as much as I will. She has left a memorable impression on the Street and I wish Alexandra all the best in the next chapter of her career.”

Alexandra added: “Playing Emma, on the most iconic street there is, has been the best experience of my life. Four years have gone so fast. Compared to other cast members, I still feel like a newbie, which makes my decision to leave all the more difficult. But I feel it’s the right time for me.

“I can’t thank everyone at Coronation Street enough for welcoming me and trusting me to tell so many wonderful and heartfelt stories. And of course for the friendships. When I see pink, I will always think of Emma.”

With the wedding confirmed for Valentine’s Day, it now seems certain that Meena will make a reappearance to spoil the day.

Emmerdale bosses have also confirmed that Meena will get her comeuppance eventually.

Producer Jane Hudson recently told and other media: “Judgement Day for Meena is coming. Whether she will get away with murder or not, you’ll have to wait to find out. There are still some more twists and turns to be had and some you won’t see coming, but I think we’re all agreed that Meena can do pretty much anything.

“Judgement Day for Meena won’t play out quite as you expect and it will have a lasting effect on quite a few of our villagers. I think within the next few months Meena will get what’s coming to her.”

Mary (Louise Jameson)

Status: Joining

When: Early 2022

More info: Louise Jameson has joined the cast of Emmerdale in the role of Rhona Goskirk’s mum Mary. Mary, who has a strained relationship with Rhona (Zoe Henry), will burst onto the scene just in time to interrupt an important moment in her daughter’s life.

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Louise to Emmerdale. It’s great to have such a high calibre and talented actor join our already strong team and she will be a fabulous asset to the show.

“Intelligent, witty and complex, Mary promises to be a force to be reckoned with in the village and for Rhona, there won’t ever be a dull moment whilst her domineering mother is around.”

“I’m a big advocate for queer people playing queer roles. I’m excited about this representation for several reasons – I get to play myself, a queer Papua New Guinean Christian. That’s pretty monumental.”

“I was glued to our TV for the wedding of Kylie [Minogue] and Jason [Donovan], while cursing Mrs Mangel and praying that Mike and Jane would eventually get together! Not to mention all the other greats over the years.
