EastEnders actress Jessie Wallace, who has played Kat Slater on the BBC soap since 2000, has shared a post on Instagram that shows her posing Jaime Winstone.
Jaime has joined the EastEnders cast to film a special flashback episode which will focus on the Mitchell family. The episode is said to include some fan favourite characters in their younger days, including Ronnie and Roxy, Grant and Archie Mitchell, among a whole host of familiar faces.
Following the announcement made yesterday on July 26, Jessie said she was ‘so excited to see @jaimewinstone playing a young Peggy in a special 1979 @bbceastenders ep!’
‘What great casting’ she added.
The role of Peggy was made famous by the late Barbara Windsor, who was also known for her roles in the Carry On films.
In 2017, a movie was made about her life, titled Babs, which saw Jaime Winstone play the iconic actress. Having portrayed the woman behind Peggy Mitchell, it seems only sensible that she would be the first choice to reprise her famous role.
Fans in the comments of the post seemed just as excited. One such commenter was drag queen Vinegar Strokes, who has recently been involved in an EastEnders storyline herself.
The comment read, ‘I’m soooo excited for this’.
Vinegar Strokes was recently brought onto set in order to coach the square’s newest drag queen, Tara Misu.
There is a lot of buzz around for the EastEnders flashback episodes, and, like Jessie, we cannot wait to see Jaime bring young Peggy to life!
Jaime enthused: ‘It’s been such an honour to step into Peggy Mitchell’s shoes for the first time, and into Barbara’s shoes for the second time. There’s certainly a healthy amount of pressure when you’re taking on such an iconic role – I thoroughly enjoyed it.
‘Playing this role has really cemented my love and admiration for Barbara as I got to bookend my journey by playing Peggy Mitchell – I hope I’ve done her justice and I’ve loved every minute of it, I can’t wait for everyone to see the episode.’
