Former EastEnders star Matt Lapinskas has had a successful and busy acting career on stage and screen, but like nearly every actor he found jobs hard to come by during the Coronavirus lockdowns.
So in 2020 he started working as a builder and started his own building company, Brightside Builders, and he’s been hitting out at people who described him as a ‘failed actor’ because he took on other employment.
‘At the end of the day, when lockdown happened and I started doing some building work, they sort of like, not that they shamed me, but they were like “failed actor turned builder”’ he told the Sun. ‘I was like why are you putting it down when someone is trying to make a living at the end of the day, but hey ho, it is what it is!’
Matt played Anthony Moon in EastEnders from 200 to 2012. The brother of Michael (Steve John Shepherd) and Tyler Moon (Tony Discipline), gambling addict Anthony was finally driven out of Walford after losing his money and business to Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) in a poker game.
Since leaving Walford Matt has taken part in Dancing on Ice where he was runner-up in 2013. More recently soap fans will have seen him in Hollyoaks in June this year playing Alex Ramsdan in a special Mallorca episode.
Matt told us that there was a possibility that he could reprise the character. ‘I spoke to the producers [about Alex’s future],’ he said. ‘It went really well so there was talk about it in the future.
‘Never say never. I’m off auditioning for other stuff; different films, and I’ve got panto booked in for Christmas. My life continues, but if Alex was to return, great – you might see him again, or you might not!’
Matt’s new comedy Horse Play starts at the Riverside Studios in London later this month, and he’s also revealed an ambition to start in another big soap.
‘My mum absolutely loves Corrie, so if she saw me on that she’d be over the moon – no pun intended there. It would be great, I’d love to be the first, I don’t think there has ever been an actor who has done all four soaps! So maybe something to do on the bucket list.’
