Maureen Lipman has been spotted filming all new Coronation Street scenes as her no-nonsense alter ego Evelyn Plummer is on a mission to save Hayley Cropper’s iconic red anorak.

More notable than even Kevin Webster’s purple coat, Hayley’s anorak was never far from Julie Hesmondhalgh’s character.

It epitomised the much missed character and was part of her wardrobe from her debut in 1997.

So when the coat ends up being accidentally given away to a charity shop, Roy Cropper (David Neilson) despairs.

Step forward hero of the hour Evelyn!

She might never admit it, and would scowl us down at the mere suggestion, but she does have a heart of gold that one.

Maureen was out and about in her role, as Evelyn searches the high street for clues on the missing fashion item.

There are only two places that Hayley’s anorak belongs – with Roy or in a museum.

But will she track it down? Or is it lost to the ages?

Let’s face it, if we saw it in a soap, we’d have it bought and straight onto eBay. It would fetch a price that would rival Elon Musk’s fortune.

Tenacious Evelyn refuses to give up, but is Audrey’s son Stephen (Todd Boyce) to blame?

Pictures also showed the recently returned actor around charity shops, looking dishevelled.

It has been speculated that he isn’t quite as wealthy as he seems; looking down and out in the upcoming scenes.

Could he be back to con Audrey?

Elsewhere, the scenes mark Evelyn’s latest storyline in the wake of Maureen confirming that she has signed a new year long contract with the show.

The actress, revealed the news while defending working on the long-running serial, branding her co-stars ‘exceptional’.

‘I won’t hear a word against it,’ she said. ‘It’s full of quite exceptional actors working with very little rehearsal, very little direction.

‘Am I envious of some of my peers? Sometimes, yes. Do I have the right to be? Of course not.

‘Would I like to be in Sex Education?,’ she told Readers Digest. ‘Yes, of course. Am I sorry I’ve signed up with Corrie for another year? No, I’m not.’

Maureen, 76, won the hearts of Corrie fans back in 2018, when she first set foot on the eponymous street as Evelyn Plummer, long-lost nan of mainstay Tyrone Dobbs.

However, this wasn’t her first stint in Weatherfield, as she briefly appeared on the cobbles in 2002, portraying interim Rovers Return landlady Lilian Spencer.

Evelyn has been at the centre of many storylines since making her cobbles debut, including a romance with old pal Arthur – not to mention getting caught in the middle when Tyrone and Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine) split!

In recent scenes, she clashed with Phill Whittaker’s (Jamie Kenna) mother Mimi, who moved in for a short while ahead of Phill and Fiz’s wedding.

The scenes will air at the end of summer.
