Stephen Reid is set to hide a financial secret after his bank card is declined in new scenes on Coronation Street.
In upcoming episodes Stephen confides in Rita about his ongoing concern for his mum Audrey and the pair agree to arrange a treat for her.
In a bid to cheer up Audrey, Rita recruits Roy and Ken to join them for a posh afternoon tea at Debbie’s hotel. But when Stephen receives a phone call from the hotel to make a deposit for the afternoon tea, his payment card is declined so he calls his Italian bank to rectify the issue.
Shona and Sarah, who have witnessed the whole situation, watch on as Stephen shouts down the phone at the bank.
Later, Stephen pays the deposit over the phone whilst at the Platt house, but using a card in the name of Mrs Gabrielle Reid. Who is Gabriella and what is the truth about Stephen’s financial situation? Could his real motives for being back on the street be coming to light?
In teasers released by the show, further details of Stephen’s financial struggles have been revealed.
The return of Stephen, Audrey’s prodigal son comes just in time as tensions build between the rest of the family. Audrey decides to use her businessman son to get her finances in order after her fury at being treated like a child by Gail and the rest of the family.
As Audrey struggles with getting older has she put her faith in the wrong member of her family?
Sue Nicholls previously spoke about Audrey’s struggles, saying: “She is going to continue to struggle, she has always worked and it was a big part of her life and she misses seeing different people and being out and about.
“Now the family are fighting over her will, which gives her a real sense of her own mortality, and that is not a nice thing to have to think about.”
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
