Will Kirk be leaving the cobbles?
Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Coronation Street‘s Andy Whyment has been a mainstay on our screens for 22 years as Kirk Sutherland, something he has no plans to change any time soon.
Appearing in 2019’s series of I’m a Celebrity, the fan favourite says he was offered opportunities upon exiting the jungle, but decided to turn them down in favour of staying on the beloved Weatherfield cobbles.
“If Corrie will have me, I’d love to be there [for another 22 years],” Whyment told Inside Soap. “When I came out of the jungle, I was asked in an interview what my plans were, and the answer was: ‘I’m going back to Corrie‘. It’s my bread and butter – I’ll be there until they tell me Kirk is no longer required!”
Reflecting on two decades of bringing the comedic and loveable Kirk into our living rooms, Whyment admitted that he finds it hard to believe he is still there and never takes the role for granted.
“Obviously you hope to [stay on the show], but when you first start you take each day as it comes. Even now I still don’t take it for granted, as I’ve seen so many people come and go. Every year when I get a new contract, my wife and I raise a glass to say ‘Cheers!’ as that’s another year off the mortgage!
“I still find it surreal, although at the end of the day, I’m just doing a job that I’ve always loved. Even now, when I go through the barriers at work, I still get a buzz thinking: ‘I’m going to be on the cobbles for the day’.”
Currently, Kirk finds himself in the midst of an uncomfortable situation at Underworld where he’s taken the credit for Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan) landing a major order for the factory, but hints it won’t be long before the truth comes out and Kirk’s promotion to sales ends.
“Kirk being Kirk doesn’t feel right about lying and he can’t sleep at night because he’s panicking and wants to tell Sarah the truth. I think eventually he will go back to packing!”
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
