Coronation Street reveals identity of Adam Barlow’s stalker

But when will Adam — and the authorities — find out?

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has revealed the identity of the person stalking Adam Barlow.

Wednesday’s (February 9) episodes saw Sarah discover a bouquet of flowers she thinks are from Adam, but when she says that they aren’t, they open the card to see a message stating: “Next bouquet will be your funeral.”

Fearing for their safety, Adam gets Ed Bailey to change the locks of the flat, and sends Sarah and Harry to stay with Nick Tilsley, stating that he will for the stalker to return and confront them. Peter comes around to keep Adam company, and sees Adam’s phone ringing with more silent calls from his tormentor.

That’s when we, as viewers get to see who the stalker on the other end of the phone is: Lydia Chambers!

Lydia was introduced as a former flame of Adam’s, and had a brief fling with Daniel Osbourne, but now her real purpose as a character has been revealed: to be part of what producer Iain MacLeod called “an updated version of a ’90s thriller”.

“You might remember all the way through the ’90s there were loads of thrillers like Fatal Attraction. Looking back on them now, they look horribly dated in terms of the gender politics,” he said.

“So we thought: ‘What might a story of that type look like in the 21st century?’ And I hope we’ve cracked it.

“I think what we’ve got is a really nuanced story where everybody is capable of behaving badly, but there is no vilification of a scorned woman or anything like that.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm on ITV.
